GST Formula & Examples

GST Amount = (Base Price × GST Rate) ÷ 100 Total Price = Base Price + GST Amount Reverse GST: Base Price = Total × 100 ÷ (100 + Rate)
Example 1 (Exclusive): ₹10,000 + 18% GST
GST = ₹1,800 | Total = ₹11,800

Example 2 (Inclusive): ₹11,800 includes 18% GST
Base = ₹10,000 | GST = ₹1,800

CGST, SGST & IGST Explained

Intra-State (Same State) CGST + SGST (split equally) Example: 18% = 9% CGST + 9% SGST
Inter-State (Different States) IGST (full rate) Example: 18% = 18% IGST

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the GST rates in India for 2025?
India has four main GST slabs: 0% (essential items), 5% (essential goods like sugar, tea, medicines), 12% (standard goods like butter, cheese, cell phones), 18% (majority of goods and services like IT services, telecom, AC restaurants), and 28% (luxury goods like cars, ACs, tobacco).
How is GST calculated on MRP products?
MRP (Maximum Retail Price) already includes GST. Use the "Price includes GST" option to find the base price and GST amount. Formula: Base Price = (MRP × 100) ÷ (100 + GST Rate). For example, MRP ₹1,180 with 18% GST = Base Price ₹1,000, GST ₹180.
What is the difference between CGST, SGST, and IGST?
For intra-state sales (within same state): CGST (Central GST) and SGST (State GST) are split equally. Total GST rate = CGST + SGST. For inter-state sales (across states): IGST (Integrated GST) is collected at full rate. Example: 18% intra-state = 9% CGST + 9% SGST, 18% inter-state = 18% IGST.
Who needs GST registration in India?
Businesses with annual turnover > ₹40 lakhs for goods (>₹20 lakhs for special category states) or >₹20 lakhs for services (>₹10 lakhs for special category). Inter-state suppliers must register regardless of turnover. E-commerce operators also require mandatory registration.
What is Input Tax Credit (ITC)?
Input Tax Credit allows businesses to claim credit for GST paid on purchases against GST collected on sales. Example: You pay ₹1,000 GST on raw materials and collect ₹1,500 GST on finished goods — you pay only ₹500 net GST. This eliminates the cascading tax effect.
What is the Composition Scheme?
Small taxpayers with turnover < ₹1.5 crore can opt for Composition Scheme. Pay tax at 1% (manufacturers), 2.5% (restaurants), or 0.5% (traders). Benefits: fewer returns, less compliance. Disadvantages: cannot claim ITC, cannot issue tax invoices, cannot make inter-state sales.
